H1N1 FLU

Your questions answered about the symptoms, prevention and treatment of the novel H1N1 flu (swine flu): What can you do to prevent the spread of novel H1n1 in your family and local community? Are the rumors true?
As one of the leading healthcare facilities in Central Kentucky, Frankfort Regional Medical Center has been especially vigilant about emergency preparedness.  All of our qualified staff are well prepared for the novel H1N1 flu.

The health of our patients, our employees, and our communities is top of mind at times like this, so our parent company, HCA, and our Clinical Services Group is in close contact with the CDC, and our treatment protocols reflect their guidance. The federal government, the Kentucky Department of Health - along with county and local health departments - and our HCA Clinical Services Group are paying very close attention to H1N1 flu trends.

As an additional resource, see Flu Facts - What to know, What to do

As this issue continues to be of national focus please note that normal flu precautions and infection prevention are your best defense against not only the H1N1 flu strain, but seasonal flu and all communicable disease. Right now it is as important as ever to:

  • Cough or sneeze into the bend of your elbow if you don't have a tissue. If you have a tissue, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw the tissue away.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after sneezing or coughing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you get sick with flu - stay home and limit your contact with others.

Taking care of ourselves when we're sick allows us to heal faster and prevents the spread of infection.

More information on H1N1 flu is available at the CDC's H1N1 and You web site, the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services web site, and http://www.flu.gov/.
